About Salzburg
Situated on the banks of the river Salzach and between the Kapuzinerberg and Mönchberg mountains, Salzburg is a cultural and historical pearl in the middle of Europe and a true architechural delight to be explored. Where in the year 700 a Benedictine Monastry was founded, Salzburg developed in the Middle Ages into an independent vatican-like church state. Salzburg is a true -if not the- example of baroque architechture in Europe and while this style dominates the old town, the outward diversity of its churches and monumental buildings is extraordinary.
The old centre of Salzburg is mostly pedestrian zone only, making it a perfect place to explore the stunning beaty of the city by foot. Acclaimed a World Historical Site by Unesco in 1997, the Old City combines medieval, renaissance and baroque architecture. The romantic squares and charming little streets reveal the city's ambience and historical importance and are great for shopping as well. You will have a great view on the old city from its two landmarks, the Kapuziner and Mönchberg, the latter known for the majestic 900 years old Fortress of Hohensalzburg, build on top of it. Well-structured walking paths will take you up the two hills pretty easily and the panoramic views make it the climb more than worthy.
Salzburg is also the native and home town of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and a visit to the Mozart place should not be missed out upon visiting this stunning city. Besides its famous son Mozart, Salzburg has for centuries been an important centre of music and untill today, musicians from all over the world come here for musical and theatrical education. The town has a varied cultural programm with its annual Salzburger Festspiele festival as a major attraction.
