About Vienna

With rise of the Habsburger dynasty in the 15th century, the city of Vienna developed itself as an important political and cultural centre in Europe. A former roman setllement, Vienna was chosen by the Habsburgers as the seat of their Holy Roman Empire, one of the most powerfull reigns in European history. Today, Vienna is the proud capital of the Austrian Republic and a must for lovers of monumental architecture, arts, culture and music. The influences of the Habsburger dynasty are visibile in Vienna throughout the stylish buildings, world-class museums, imposant monuments and the melting pot of its inhabitants, coming from several parts of the former Hasburg Emprine to this vibrant city.

The historical city centre - the Innere Stadt- is situated on the south banks of the river Danube, that divides Vienna in two parts. From the other side it is encircled by the Ringstrasse, a ninetheen century boulevard-type street where most of the public buildings are located. The eye-catcher in the heart of the city centre is the renowed St. Stephan's Cathedral, a stunning architechtual masterpiece of which construction started already in the 12th century. Typical for the cathedral is that it combines various architectual styles and influeces, due to the long time for the cathedral to be finished.

The main tourist attraction of Vienna is Schloss Schönbrunn, the former seat and summer residance of the Habsburgers. Schönbrunn nowadays combines some interesting museums and art galleries and a beautiful park surrounds the monumental site. Other wellknown tourist attractions in Vienna include the Prater, Austria's largest and oldest funfair, and the Belvedere Barock Musuem, which provides a great panoramic view on the old city.
