About Antwerp
Located in the Flemish-speaking part of Belgium, about 50 km north of Brussels, Antwerp is the second biggest city and an important economic centre in Belgium. With the second biggest port of Europe, Antwerp is a traditional blue-collar city as opposed to the more classy Brussels, though with time the city has become a more and more trendy place and an increasing popular tourist destination.
Blessed with a rich cultural and historical heritage and being a city where pleasure and entertainment are valued highly, Antwerp has a lot to offer to visitors. The city had a golden period during the 17th century prosperity of the Low Countries, of which Flemish-Belgium was part at the time. Despite the bombings during WWII, many monuments, historical buildings and treasures of that time are still preserved. The city has a variety of great museums, monuments and sights and combined with its vibrant nightlife and gastronomical highlights, it makes Antwerp a great destination to visit.
Upon exploring Antwerp, a good place to start is the beautiful Grote Markt (central town square). Surrounded by the so-called guild houses and the stunning Renaissance-style Town hall, the square reflects the city’s importance in earlier days. A guided tour in the town hall is a strong recommendation and also the nearby Our Lady’s Cathedral is worth a visit. The many bars and terraces surrounding the square give the place a charming and lively ambience. Definitely a good place to try out one of the famous Flemish beers!
Antwerp’s most elegant shopping street, Meir, connects the central town square with the impressive Central Station. Besides the many classy shops, the Meir is also characterized by its many historical majestic buildings. The Jewish district, unique in its kind in Europe, is next to the Central Station (south side) and if you are interested to learn more about Antwerp’s famous diamond industry, you should definitely include a visit to this district in your program.
For nightlife entertainment, the district north of the Central Station is a good place for bars and clubs. With a strong historical connection to the harbor activities, the ambience of area still reflects the old days when sailors were looking for some on-shore distractions. Also a stroll along the quays of the River Schelde, close to the city centre, gives some interesting sights on the port activities.
Antwerp provides a good home base to visit nearby historical towns like Brugge or Gent and also Brussels is within close reach. Most visitors to Antwerp will arrive on the International Airport of Brussels/Zaventem, which is about 30 km south of Antwerp. There are good rail and road connections to take you quickly into downtown.
