About Brussels

Brussels or Bruxelles is the cosmopolitan bilingual capital of Belgium. Strategically located in the heart of Europe, the city combines a rich historical heritage, glamour, culture and gastronomic highlights. Considered the capital of the European Union, as the main bodies of the EU reside here, Brussels is the city of politics and diplomacy. Besides the Belgian and EU governing powers, a variety of international head offices are located within its city limits.

Downtown Brussels is roughly divided in two main regions, being Upper Town and Lower Town. Upper Town has most of the glamour with its boulevards and luxurious shopping districts, while Lower Town comprises most of the historical city centre.

Apart from the famous Manneken Pis statue, the main attraction of Brussels is the beautiful town square, the Grand Place or Grote Markt, with its famous city hall and charming guild houses. Towering above the town square the city halls’ gothic tower reflects the grandeur and importance of the city since centuries in Northern Europe as a centre for trade and politics. The market square hosts many concerts and events and the many terraces bordering the square are a favorable spot to enjoy a good Belgian beer.

Brussels has a vibrant cultural program and hosts a number of interesting museums and galleries. A recommendation is the Musées Royaux des Beaux-Arts de Belgique, the Belgian Royal Museum of Fine Arts, combining an interesting collection of ancient and modern art. For (window) shopping, a visit to the luxurious St. Hubert gallery should not be missed out upon visiting Brussels. Close to the nineteenth century gallery, the renowned Rue des Bouchers is a gastronomic centre in Brussels with a large offering of excellent seafood restaurants.

Gastronomy is an important aspect in the burgundy-type lifestyle of the citizens of Brussels. Besides the top restaurants, the city is also well-known for its delicious treats, including chocolate, waffles, truffles, and a wide variety of splendid Belgian beers.

The Brussels International Airport (Zaventem) is located about 15 km north of Brussels. The city has good road and rail connections to cities like Paris, Amsterdam and Frankfurt making it easy to get to the city when flying into one of those cities. Upon staying in Brussels, possibilities of day trips to popular tourist destinations like Bruges, Antwerp and Leuven are easy to undertake and definitely a recommendation.
