About Oostende
Oostende is the largest city on the Belgian coast and has an important port as well as a busy ferry connection to the United Kingdom. Founded as a fishing village, the city developed into a fashionable beach resort when the Royal Family of Belgium started spending their holidays here. Due to World War II bombings, little has remained of these golden times for the city and the present Oostende is a modern port city with entertainment and beaches attracting most of the visitors.
Besides the beaches, Oostende offers a variety of monuments and museums. The monuments reflect the turbulent history of the city that is marked by invading powers and warfare. Most impressive are the Atlantik Wall (build during the German occupancy in WWII) and Fort Napoleon. Also the Mercator Ship, nowadays a floating museum is worthwhile a visit. Not surprisingly for port city with a large fishing industry, sea food is plenty available in Oostende! The “Visserkaai” is the place to be where most seafood restaurants are based and where the fishing market is a great venue to grasp the ambience of the city’s active fishing industry.
