Rio de Janeiro – a cidade maravilhosa – is a giant metropolis that is unique in combining a modernized society with astonishing wonders of nature, amazing beaches and historical hotspots. Looking down from the two famous landmarks, the Sugar Loaf and the Christ Statue, you rapidly understand why the Cariocas are so proud of their city. The beaches of Copacana and Ipanema are rightfully considered among the most famous on the planet and with the Tijuca National Park, Rio has an entire rainforest embedded within its city borders!
Finding your way around in Rio de Janeiro is not that hard. In general, the place to be is the South Side of the city. Due to its landmarks and beaches, you will always have good references of where you are. Although there are buses and a limited subway network (in downtown), taxis are the most recommended means of transport in Rio. If you are not familiar in Rio, we strongly advise you not to rent a car. The risk of coincidently ending up in one of the many city slums (favelas), often neighboring the better regions, is a risk not worth taking. Your hotel in Rio de Janeiro can advice you where to go and where not to go.
