About Montreal

Montreal is an old and historic city that dates back to 1642. The old city center is now a vast texture of different architectural periods. Reminiscent of times when the urban life, was a thing of culture and taste, times that can still be savored by the welcomed guest. The Old Montreal city center is within walking distance of many wonderfully relaxing attractions for the historically inclined as well as art galleries, sidewalk cafés, restaurants, and museums. Place D’Armes is the pulsing heart of any good tour. From its center, the fountain monument of Sieur de Maisonneuve, the founder of Montreal, a range of historically important architecture surrounds the square. 17th, 19th, and 20th century buildings blend in with the grove of trees circumnavigating the square.

Walking just a few hundred meters, the oldest building in Montreal still stands, Sulpician Seminary, built in 1685, when the city was still named Ville Marie, just before the wooden palisade was built around the village to protect it. In 1824 a Gothic revival inspired the building of a mini sized Notre Dame, called Notre Dame de Montréal, which was finished in 1829 and then later remodeled to fit the Victorian area. To read about this historical church is a pale shadow in the moon light sky compared to the breathtaking smell of its splendid woodwork first hand.

For those who like parks, Montréal is surrounded by green, not to mention Parc de Jean-Drapeu. Known for its water sports and rentals it is one of the biggest parks in Montréal, with a biosphere in the center for those scientifically inclined. Parc du Mont Royal, is probably the biggest park in the city with its Victorian and Gothic Cemeteries. Its most prominent feature is without a doubt the awesome historical paintings inside the Chalet du Mont Royal, done by internationally renowned artists.

Montréal is also a wonderful starting point for any relaxing vacation around Quebec as well as being neighbor to Vermont and only three hours from New York, it is possible to rent a car and drive or even rent a sailboat for the weekend and sail through the channel, seeing all the historical landmarks from the water, or even going ashore. The Old Montréal also has ready access to shopping malls and movie theaters, and its bilingual French/English residents are always ready to help a visitor find their way.
