Formula 1 - Grand Prix of Australia
Albert Park - Melbourne
The Australian Grand Prix, since 1996 held at the Melbourne Grand Prix
Circuit in Albert Park, became part of the F1 world championship in 1985.
Before Albert Park, the city of Adelaide hosted the race on a notorious
street circuit, of which the most famous race took place in 1986 when
Nigel Mansell, Nelson Piquet and Alain Prost fought closely in a title
race.
The Albert Park circuit is next to Monaco the only street circuit. Beautifully
situated around a lake, it is a tough race-track to handle for the F1-pilots,
due to the low grip and the intense heat of the Australian summer. Being
known as a fast circuit with long straight parts and fast curves, the
Melbourne F1 race offers its visitors every year a fantastic and thrilling
start of a new Grand Prix season.
