Formula 1 - United States Grand Prix
Indianapolis, United States
The city of Indianapolis is linked to motor sports. You don’t need to be a fan of racing sports to know that the Indianapolis Motor Speedway is the homebase of one of the most important racing venues in the world, the Indy 500. Together with Monaco and Le Mans, the Indy 500 is not just a race, it stands alone as a classic annual event in the racing world.
The history of Formula 1 and Indianapolis goes back a long way. The “brickyard” hosted Formula 1 cars already in the F1 starting year of 1950 and until 1960 it served a venue of the championship. Since then, other tracks hosted the U.S. Formula 1 event, though, it never became a success in the country where the sport never achieved a status even close to baseball, basketball, football or the national pride, the Indy500. As such, after the race in Phoenix in 1991, the USA venue was taken off the program.
Indianapolis Motor Speedway
With the choice of the Indianapolis Speedway, the United States are back in the F1 spotlights since 2000. With a brand new infield track and a capacity to host 400,000 visitors, the Indy-F1 is a spectacular and attractive event. The combination of the high speed section of the Indy-oval track and a slower infield course makes the circuit unique of its kind in the F1 championship. Power is an advantage here and the tires will suffer a lot, especially on the oval-part due to its sideway slope structure.
