Calais
Situated on the northern coast of France, Calais strategically positioned on the narrow and busy sea-passage connection the
North Sea with the Atlantic Ocean. On the other side of the sea passage, which is named after Calais, the English town of Dover is
only 40 km away from Calais. As such, Calais-Dover is a popular transit point for British and Continental travelers to go from
and to the British Isles. Especially with the Euro-Tunnel, the connection with Britain has become strong and nowadays over
10 million British travelers or day trippers make the cross-over every year.
Largely destroyed during WWII, Calais has not a lot of historical attractions to offer its visitors. Most people come here to
shop. In the southern section of the city, Calais Sud, the Jacquard Boulevard is a popular shopping destination, while Calais Nord
has the Place d’Armes as its attraction on shoppers. As to cultural venues, the museum “Musee des Beaux Arts et de la Dentelle”
provides an interesting collection of 16th to 20th century art, including Picasso and Dubuffet. Stop by the city town hall as
well, where you will find the beautiful and famous sculpture of Rodin, “The Burghers of Calais”.
