Clermont-Ferrand
Clermont-Ferrand is the economic and cultural centre of the Auvergne/Massif Central region. At the place where in roman
times the Gauls achieved their only victory against the armies of Julius Caesar, originally were two rivaling towns,
Clermont and Montferrand. United in 1630 for administrative purposes by Louix XIII, the current city of Clermont-Ferrand
is build on the top of a volcano. But don’t worry, the volcano is extinct.
As a university city, Clermont-Ferrand has a vivid and spontaneous ambience and there are plenty of café’s, restaurants
and bars to enjoy your stay here. The ancient Clermont-part is the most interesting to visit, with the Cathedrale Notre-Dame
as the historical eye-catcher. Though, the main attraction of the city is the nearby Puy de Dome. Being a remainder of a
volcanic explosion, the Puy de Dome is an excellent point to overlook the Massif Central region. At clear days, even the
Mont Blanc is visible from here!
