Rennes
The city of Rennes played an important role in the history of the Brittany region. The nearby towns of Fougères and Vitré
provide an insight into the medieval battles when Brittany defended its independence and Rennes itself has been the capital
of the Brittany since the region united with France in 1532. Due to a city fire in 1720, a large part of the historic city
has vanished. Though there are still traces of medieval Rennes to be found that nowadays are mixed with 18th century
architectural grandeur. The Vilaine River divides Rennes in two: the historical northern part of the town and the more
modern southern part.
Due to the presence of two universities, Rennes is a vivid and energetic city. The charming narrow streets of the old town
are full of bars, boutiques and restaurants. The city has an active cultural program with as its highlight the “Tombées de la
Nuit” festival in July, with a variety of concerts and parades.
