About Hamburg
Hamburg is the second largest city in Germany and characterized as a modern and vibrant port-city in the north of the country. Officially named the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, the city-state (nowadays one of the federal states of Germany) has since centuries been an independent and prosperous centre of trade and commerce and one of Europe’s main harbors.
The port of Hamburg is responsible for a large part of the city’s economic activities. Other major industries includes media and entertainment, with Warner Music, AOL and a variety of Germany’s newspaper and magazine publishing houses, aerospace (Airbus) and heavy industries (steel, copper).
Although the city does not have a historical centre anymore, there are still plenty of attractions and interesting sights to visit. The city hall and the St. Michaelis church are definitely well-worth a visit for their historical and architectural value, while a harbor tour and a stroll along the Landungsbrücken harbor promenade should not be missed out when visiting Hamburg.
Most of Hamburg’s museums and galleries are located in the Art Mile District, with the KunstHalle as the main eye-catcher. In the tradition of a port-city, a red-light district does not miss out in Hamburg. The St. Pauli neighborhood has become a tourist hot-spot with a wide variety of entertainment and the notorious Reeperbahn as its central vain.
Upon arriving on Hamburg International Airport, airport buses will take you to the city centre efficiently. If you are planning on traveling by land, the city is well-connected by road and rail to all major cities in Germany, as well as other capital cities in Europe.
