About Hanover
Hanover is the capital of the German federal state of Lower Saxony and strategically located in the centre of a triangle, formed by the industrial Rhine-Ruhr region in the west, the major port city Hamburg in the north and Berlin in the east. Once a royal city and with a rich and turbulent history, Hanover is nowadays a prosperous modern city that is most renowned for its international trade fairs and extensive convention centers.
Dominated by the Hanover Messe-grounds southeast of the city, which is among the most high tech exhibitions grounds in Europe and home to the famous CeBIT IT & Telecom trade show, millions of visitors come to Hanover each year for business, trade fairs and leisure. The city has a well-structured infrastructure in transport facilities and accommodation that ensure you a pleasant and comfortable stay in the city.
Although the WWII bombings swept away a large part of the historical heritage of this royal city, Hanover still has a wide variety of attractions and sights making it more then worthwhile to spend some time discovering the city. The Old and New Town Halls, the Marktkirche church and the Opera House are historical landmarks, while the beautiful Herrenhäuser Gardens are the city’s main attraction. These formal royal gardens are nowadays home to many festivals and theatre performances and a true legacy to the city’s royal grandeur.
Several interesting museums, charming half-timbered houses and cozy beer halls can be found in the Old Town (Altstadt) of Hanover. The city centre in the region around the Central Station is a great place for shopping and responsible for Hanover’s reputation as a shopping paradise. Furthermore, the former castle of the Hanover royalty, the Leineschloss, is an interesting site to visit.
