About Montmartre
Montmartre has both historical and cultural significance to the Parisians. The “Mountain of the Martyr” was the location of Saint Denis’ untimely demise at the hands of a sword more than 1700 years ago. Beheaded, Saint Denis picked up his head from the ground at the top of the mountain and walked to where the Basilica of Sacré Coeur now stands, the entire time speaking a sermon to the people of Gaul.
Hotels in Montmartre have excellent views of these historical spots, but also find themselves perfectly placed for what was once the highpoint of Victorian nightlife. During the Victorian Renaissance, Montmartre became a mecca for art and artists from all over the world. Some important locations are Clichy, La Villette, Moulin Rouge, Le Chat Noir, Place du Tertre, Basilica of the Sacré Cœur and especially on the Left Bank, Montparnasse, which later became the principal artistic center of Paris.
Even Pablo Picasso had an alternative community of impoverished artists in Montmartre.
