Ronda
As one of the most peculiar towns in Spain, you will be astonished upon arriving in Ronda.
The Andalucian town is build on the edge of a staggering canyon, going down 120 meter straight.
Coming from the nearby city of Marbella via the winding access road to Ronda through the “Serranía
de Ronda” mountain range, you will wonder who ever proposed the idea to build a village here!
The charming and fascinating town is a popular tourist destination and especially day-trippers
from the coastal beach resorts frequent the historical town.
Ronda combines a wide variety of architectural history, including Roman, Moorish, Gothic and
late medieval remembrances. Even pre-historical artifacts were found here. The eye-catcher of the
town is the Puente Nuevo (New Bridge) which connects the two city sections that are divided by a
100 meter deep gorge. The “new” bridge was build in the mid 18th century and as such the division
between the two sides of Ronda are clearly visible: a historical medieval town and a more recent
urban section called El Mercadillo.
A major attraction of Ronda is the bullring, which is one of the oldest and most beautiful in
Spain. It also has the largest arena of the country and the adjacent Bullfighting Museum provides
a fascinating exhibition of this typical Spanish cultural ritual. The panoramic views over the
mountain ranges from the gardens close to the bullring are worth a visit as well.
