San Sebastián
Founded in 1180, San Sebastian is a main city in the Basque country, clinched between Spain and
French on the Bay of Biscay. The Euskadi (Basque language) name for San Sebastian is Donostia and
this name is still used nowadays by the local population. In fact, both the Spanish (Castilian) and
Euskadi are recognized as official languages and most signs in the city are indicated in the two
languages. A famous beach resort in the past century, San Sebastian still maintains an exclusive
and cosmopolitan ambience and until today, the city is an attractive holiday destination on the
Northern coast of Spain.
Due to its privileged geographical location, between the Mount Urgull, the Urumea river and the
curved bay facing the Atlantic Ocean, San Sebastian has served in past as an important military
port. Most interesting spots in San Sebastian are the old historical center, Parte Vieja, the La
Concha bay, the coastal beaches west of the city and the Mount Urgull, scene of a historical
Anglo-French battle.
