About the Place de la Bastille
Bastille Square is an important reminder of the French Revolution. The renowned Bastille Prison once sat on the very spot where Place de la Bastille stands today, but was completely overrun by the mob and then torn down during the revolution of July 1789. Obviously it has historical significance, but more importantly is the location that seems to be so attractive. Hotels nearby favor Place de la Bastille as a reference point as it is the starting point for excellent day tours on foot around the neighborhood.
The main attraction of the square is the July Column in memory of the Revolution of 1830, but also Opera Bastille, the traditional Paris Opera house. From the Bastille subway, other parts of the city are within a few minutes ride. Notably, in the northeastern part of the Bastille district there is a very busy nightlife for those who enjoy the moonlight, dancing and restaurants of Paris.
