About Stockholm

Few cities give map-makers such headdaches as Stockholm... just imagine drawing all 24,000 islands that make up its metropolitan region! Venice might be the leading name in urban waterways, though, Stockholm is definitely a good compeitition. The many waterways and islands, combined with the city’s many parks, cultural attractions, lively streets and a charming old town, give Stockholm a special ambience that makes the city one of the most beautiful capitals in Europe as well as one of Scandinavia’s most popular tourist destinations.

The original city was build on three islands, Helgeandsholmen, Riddarholmen and Staden. These three islands nowadays form the historical centre of the city, called Gamla Stan. Here you will find most of the city’s attractions, historical buildings and a lot of charming restaurants. Set in a comforting tranquility due to the banning of cars in most parts of the old town, Gamla Stan is a true tribute to the history of Stockholm, if not of Sweden.

In the middle of Gamla Stan, the Stadhuset (town hall) is a major landmark and tourist attraction. A guided tour will in this town hall with its remarkable tower will take you as well through the Blue Room, renowned for the annual Nobel Prize banquet. The Nobel Prize venue itself takes place in the Konserthuset (concert hall). Other monumental buildings in Gamla Stan include the famous Storkyrkan cathdedral and the Royal Palace. The royal family moved out, though, the Palace itself is definitely worth a visit.

Outside the city centre, the gardens of Kungsträdgarden and island of Djurgarden, with the first open-air museum in Europe, are great places to visits. Besides, around 50 museums spread out over the city are waiting for the seekers of culture, art and history! Though, it is not only history and culture that Stockholm provides. Known as lively and trend-setting city, Stockholm provides as well a great variety of entertainment, bars, clubs and restaurants.

Stockholm’s Alanda airport is situated 40 km north of the city and serves a variety of international carriers. In addition, Stockholm has well-organised bus and rail connections to the Europe mainland and other cities in Sweden and Norway. If you want to combine your trip to Stockholm with a visit to Helsinki or Tallinn, ferry services will take you across the Baltic Sea to the capitals of Finland and Estonia.
