About Interlaken

The popularity of Interlaken among tourists derives from the typical Swiss countryside that surrounds this town. It simply combines everything that Switzerland has to offer: alpine sceneries of astonishing beauty, mountain peaks, chalet-style villages, glaciers, horse sleighs, alphorn blowers and yodeling.

With a population of 15,000 and its strategical location between various major attractions in Switzerland, Interlaken is the unofficial capital of the picturesque Bernese Oberland canton. A major tourist hub in the region, Interlaken makes an excellent home base for undertaking day trips to the lakes, mountains and villages around the village. The name Interlaken derives from the town's location between two lakes, the Thunersee and the Brienzersee and the municipality of Interlaken includes as well the villages of Matten and Unterseen. The eye-catchers of the surrounding region are the three staggering mountain peaks, the Eiger, the Mönch and the Jungfrau. From Interlaken you can make a scenic railway trip up the Jungfraujoch, Europe's highest train station.

Interlaken is around 70 km southeast of Bern and can be reached easily by either car or train.
