About Anchorage
Anchorage is an odd city to both American and Alaska standards. Compared to American cities, Anchorage is one of a kind in combining urban and nature aspects in one city. In no other US city you have the change to stand eye-to-eye with a wild moose in a city park, overtaking a sled dog in the streets or find wildlife parks bordering so close to city limits. Though, for the Alaska population, Anchorage is the reflection of American culture as it is the only city in the State that has high rise office buildings, fast food chains and big shopping malls.
The development of Anchorage is marked by three main factors. Founded as a camp site for workers on the Seward-Fairbanks railroad, the city experienced its first boom with the arrival of US military bases to the city after WWII. The exploration of oil fields led to the second boom, when major oil companies placed head offices in the city. And finally, Anchorage became a major cargo transport hub, providing vast employment for the Ted Stevens International Airport.
Almost 50% of the population of Alaska lives in Anchorage or its suburbs. Downtown Anchorage is characterized by office buildings, restaurants, shops and cultural entertainment. Also most hotel chains are located here. A great site to visit is the Captain Cook’s Resolution Park platform, located at the waterfront of the Knik Arm.
From here, you can peek via a telescope at Mount Kinley, the highest mountain peak on US territory and located about 200 km from Anchorage.
Another interesting place to visit is Earthquake Park, located southwest of downtown between the airport and the Cook’s Inlet bay. The park is a memorial to the disastrous earthquake that hit this part of Alaska in 1964 and devastated a large part of the city. The former residential area where Earthquake Park is situated was completely washed up in the bay. Besides the memorial monument, the park is a great place to stroll and relax.
Most tourists visiting Anchorage will go from here on their exploration trips to discover the natural beauties in Alaska far away from the city. Though, close to Anchorage, a number of national parks provide great opportunities for day trips. Recommended day trip destinations include the Anchorage Coastal Wildlife Refuge and the Chugach State Park.
