About Los Angeles

When referring to Los Angeles one often does not refer to the city itself but the Los Angeles County. A big melting pot of cities and cultures make up this enormous metropolitan area that combines canyons, deserts, mountains and beaches. World famous for its movie and entertainment business, the city of angels has since its foundation by the Goldrush settlers been a magnet to people from all over the world that come here to find their share of the fame, success and prosperity. As such, Los Angeles is a showcase of the American Dream and the ambience of the region reflects that untill today.

The 10 million inhabitants of the metropolitan LA County region are spread out over various cities and districts, each maintaining its characteristics, cultures, pecularities and attractions. The ethnic diversity of L.A. is impressive and besides having the third-largest Hispanic population in the world, the city gives home to large numbers of Koreans, Chinese, Japanese and Pacific Islanders, to name a few. The actual city of Los Angeles itself does not have much to offer to visitors, although Downtown LA is an important business and financial district, with the typical American skyscrapers determining its landscape.

Where to go in Los Angeles

The most renowned and popular areas of Los Angeles can be found west of Downtown. Top on the list is Hollywood, the charismatic home base of the American movie industry. Although many of the movie sets have in time been relocated to the outskirts of the country, Hollywood is still an interesting place to visit, with the Walk of Fame and the Chinese Theater on Hollywood Boulevard as its main attractions. From the Griffith Observatory, used in the knife-fighting scene in the classic Rebel without a Cause, you have a great view on the city.

Going west on Sunset Boulevard, you will arrive in Beverly Hills, home of the rich and the wealthy. A visit to the Rodeo Drive shopping street, known for its world-renowned fashion shops is a must upon visiting Los Angeles for the first time. On the northern coast of LA County, Santa Monica is the starting point of the famous Route 66, the sceneric Pacific Highway that goes all the way to San Fransisco. Santa Monica is a great place for bars and restaurants and here you will find some of the best beaches of the region. South of Santa Monica, another tourist hot spot is located, Venice Beach. Its boulevard is a popular setting for movies and television productions and it is lively place with street performers and little stores.

Some of the main tourist attraction of Los Angeles, Disneyland and Knotts Berry Farm, are located in Orange County, south of L.A. in the city of Anaheim. Though, Orange County has more to offer them theme parks only. Like Newport Beach, a great place to relax upon visiting L.A. with nice beaches and charming boulevard. Other interesting sites in L.A. include the beach city of Long Island and the Universal Studios.

Concludingly, the biggest metropolitan region in the sunny state of California offers you a wide variety of cities, districts, attractions and interesting sites to visit. Whether it is the beach culture, touring the famous spots of Hollywood and Beverly Hills or taking your kids to one of the county’s world famous theme parks, Los Angeles has it all
