About San Diego
Founded by the Spanish as the first settlement in California, San Diego is a lively city on the south border of California with Mexico. The Hispanic influences are everywhere visible and give the city its charms, while San Diego is also a true American city in every way. Situated on a natural harbor, the San Diego bay, San Diego is an important naval port city and a commercial-industrial centre in Southern California. Downtown San Diego is located just east of the San Diego Bay with the extended Broad Way as its main artery and focal point. Close to downtown, the waterfront at the Bay provides a lot of sights and activities and is definitely worthwhile a visit. The waterfront Embarcadero provides a great view on the harbor activities and is famous for its seafood.
South of downtown, the Gaslamp District is a charming neighborhood and a hotspot for nightlife entertainment. In the past a notorious area of old warehouses and run-down houses, the district has experienced a revival and is nowadays a vibrant part of town attracting many tourists and locals to is restaurants, pubs and clubs. For a taste of the historical San Diego, make sure you include a visit to the Old Town in your program. The neighborhood preserves some early settlement homes and a variety of museums about the history of the city. The district is also famous for its Mexican flavor, with the Mariachi music, Mexican dishes and ice-cold margaritas as its main trademarks.
The main tourist attractions of San Diego are SeaWorld and Balboa Park. SeaWorld is a must for families visiting San Diego and is located just North of Old Town in the Mission Bay area. Balboa Park is a large park in the midst of San Diego and home of the renowned San Diego Zoo. The beautiful park is a favorable place for concerts and cultural venues and also has a variety of interesting museums and art galleries.
