About San Jose
The first town in “Neuva California”, San Jose is now the third largest city in the state of California. Founded in 1777 as a farming community for nearby military installations, San Jose later became the first capital city in the state of California in 1850.
For over 150 years a simple farming community, the California Gold Rush did much to the city’s early ethnicity. It wasn’t until the 1943 with the establishment of the IBM west coast headquarters that the change from agriculture to technology began. By the early 1950’s, the city of San Jose was already a booming entrepreneurial bedroom community. By the year 1969 San Jose had 495,000 residents and was growing annually eight percent. In 1976 IBM left the downtown area and built the Santa Teresa Laboratories in Coyote Valley establishing the future of Silicon Valley.
With Mediterranean weather, tempered by the presence of the San Fancisco Bay and protected by mountains on all three sides, San Jose has sunshine over 300 days a year. The most recent snow fall that touched the valley floor was in 1976, and the winter endows the fields and hillsides with green native grass and vegetation. Deciduous trees go bare in the winter, but in the summer, the dry hills become a golden blanket of splendor that has enchanted the inhabitants from times lost till this very day.
