About St. Petersburg
Nicknamed “The Sunshine City”, St. Pete to locals, St. Petersburg was founded around 1876, when John C. Williams bought the land with the intention of bringing down a railroad. The name comes from a coin toss, the winner Peter Demens, who was born in St. Petersburg Russia won. The first hotel however was named by Williams after his city Detroit. Located on the peninsula between Tampa Bay and the Gulf of Mexico, causeways and bridges connect St. Petersburg to the city of Tampa in the north and Bradeton in the south. The Gandy Bridge was the first to cross Tampa Bay and allowed for automobile traffic.
Some tourist attractions include The Museum of fine Art, Holocost Museum, Salvador Dali Museum and a History Museum. The Salavdor Dali Museum houses one of the largest art galleries outside of Europe and includes some of the most famous paintings of Christopher Columbus. At the Pier, a large aquarium is open to the public, as well as a replica of the HMS Bounty used in the Marlon Brando Movie. Downtown the International Museum near the Baywalk shopping complex is a great place to see traveling exhibitions. The Movie Theater Muvico has 20 different theaters and for those who like to discover the different kinds of plants that inhabit the world, St. Petersburg is home to one of the most beautiful botanical gardens in the northern part of the city.
The Sunken Gardens, contain more than 500 different species of Tropical and Subtropical plant life, and various different themes such as the Japanese Gardens, Cactus Garden and Butterfly Garden. The Sunken Gardens began in 1903 and have been run by the city of St. Petersburg since 1999.
