Jeremiah Leeds was the first non native settler to build a permanent structure on the island at Arctic and Arkansas Ave in 1785. By 1853 the interest in the island grew so much for its qualities as a resort that people began to come by ship, in the hundreds. With the construction of railroads and roads, the lighthouse became less and less used. A little over a half mile from the beach inlet, the lighthouse that was once on the edge of the beach is now underwater. The more Atlantic City grew, the more people would come and the more SAND became a problem. The first Boardwalk was constructed in 1870 by Alexander Boardman and reconstructed again in 1880. Today the wooden planks that make up the Boardwalk come together to 60 feet wide and six miles long of shops on one side and attractions on the other.
