About Buffalo

Buffalo is most famous for the nearby Niagara Falls, one of America's top tourist attractions and rightfully referred to as a wonder of nature. Check out our database of hotels in or nearby Buffalo. This beautiful northern part of New York State on the US-Canadian border will offer you plenty of options to enjoy your stay.

Originally the city of Buffalo, New York was settled by the Seneca tribe, a group of Iroquois Indians that lived throughout the Niagara Falls region. The name Buffalo, comes from a mispronunciation of the French name "beau fleuve" (beautiful river) due to its location at the birth of the Niagara River. Historically, most of the western region of what is now New York was granted by Charles the II of England, to the Duke of York (James the II of England), however, far from English troops, the French were living peacefully in the area among the Iroquois until the French/Indian War which ended in the early 1760’s.

By 1763 the British took military control and the first “American” was Cornelius Winney who set up a log cabin trading post in 1789. The Dutch bought the region in the Holland Land Purchase and gave the region the name of New Amsterdam. By 1811 it already had 500 citizens mostly of Anglo-American blood. During the mid 1800’s, Buffalo became an underground railway for escaping slaves from the south. The lush green vegetation from the late humid summers in Buffalo is almost unrecognized, as most people seem to think of Buffalo being a city of long winters. But even the winters in Buffalo are marked by “snowbelts”, with winter snow covering the landscape and spots of sun popping up in one place, then fifteen miles away in another.

The Buffalo snow storms in deep winter often take most of the media hype, but truth be told, Lake Erie makes the hottest summer days cool and relaxing with refreshing southwest winds that blow through the city of Buffalo with sweet smells of green.
