About Austin

Austin is the capital of Texas, the largest state on the US continent. Still fairly unknown by foreigners, the city has gained substantial recognition in the USA as an increasingly popular and trendy city to live, work and visit. With the boom of high tech companies coming to Austin, the city’s economy is prospering and the population is been growing rapidly over the last few decades.

The vibrant city of Austin is a centre for music and arts in Texas. Nicknamed as “the live music capital of the world”, the city has an active and varied cultural program and opportunities to enjoy live music in one of its many bars, clubs or outdoor venues are plenty. With two universities within its city limits, the student-population gives Austin a lively ambience and the city is also a favorite home town for many artists and musicians.

For entertainment and live music, you should go to Sixth Street. A surplus of great bars, clubs, charming restaurants and street artists make it a perfect place to get a taste of Austin’s reputation as the trendy hotspot of Texas. Other recommendable venues for live music can be found on Red River Street or at “the Strip” on East 6th Street.

One of Austin’s major attractions is Zilker Park. The beautiful Barton Springs natural pool is a must-see upon visiting Austin and the park offers a variety of musical, dance and theater venues all-year through. Austin does not have a abundance of monumental sites or museums. The Texas State Capitol building is well-worth a visit; a pink granite Renaissance style building dating from the mid nineteenth century, overlooking Congress Avenue. Close to the Capitol Building, the Austin Museum of Art is a good option to include some culture into your Austin visit.

Situated in the southern part of Central Texas, Austin is pretty close to other major cities in Texas, like San Antonio (130km) and Houston (250 km). A new and modern airport, the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, facilitates inbound visitors from international destinations, though most airlines use the major hubs of Houston and Dallas, with transfer connection to Austin.
