About San Antonio

San Antonio is a rapidly growing city in the Southern part of Texas. Founded as a Spanish mission post and with a turbulent past, including Spanish and Mexican ruling, San Antonio played an important part in the history of Texas. The Alamo mission point, which marked the settlement what nowadays is San Antonio, was the place where Texas gained its independence and many tourists come to San Antonio to find the reminders of this epic period in American history.

Though fairly unknown to foreigners, San Antonio has grown into a major US city and plays a important role as a commercial, cultural and industrial centre in the south of the United States. The Tex Mex culture gives a pleasant flavor to the city and Spanish and English seem to go hand in hand in San Antonio.

Upon exploring San Antonio, the compact downtown district provides most attractions and sights. Bordered on the west by the San Antonio River, here you will find The Alamo, nowadays a museum, and the Riverwalk. The Riverwalk area dominated by a canal that was developed to overflow water from the San Antonio River, and has become a major spot for restaurants, bars and entertainment. Also many hotels are located in the Riverwalk area. Close to the Riverwalk district, the Hemisfair Park houses the San Antonio Convention Center.

Outside downtown, the oldest neighborhood of San Antonio, La Villita, and the King William Historic District are worth a visit for their historical charms and heritage. Culture lovers should not miss the San Antonio Museum of Art and the adjacent Rockefeller Center, which collections and exhibitions are original, creative and interesting. Alamo Heights is a wealthy residential district that provides a variety of high class shopping and dining opportunities.

Northeast of San Antonio, the so-called Texas Hill County is renowned for its landscapes and limestone caves and if you have time to spend, make sure you include a trip to the surroundings of the city as well. For children, the entertainment parks of Six Flags and Sea World provide a nice day activity.

The downtown and business districts are within a 20 minute drive from the San Antonio International Airport (SAT). Renting a car upon staying in San Antonio might be a challenge as the downtown area is difficult to navigate and parking space is limited. Apart from taxis, renting a bike is a popular alternative upon exploring the main attractions of the city and the well-equipped infrastructure for bicycles makes it a great leisure activity!
